美しい森、美しい素材を生かす
木製家具メーカーとしてできること
日本の森林が今、さまざまな課題を抱えている中で、クオリティだけを求めたり、入手しやすさや使いやすさといった人の都合で、材を選んでいてよいのだろうかということを、日本の木製家具メーカーとしてずっと考えてきた。そんな想いから生まれたのが「Karimoku New Standard」「MAS」「Karimoku Case」といった国産材を使ったブランドだ。ただ、僕たちの拠点である愛知県の森も、産業としての持続可能性が危ぶまれているのが現状。だからこそ、愛知県産の木も積極的に使っていくべきだと考えていたところに、同県からはじまった今回のプロジェクトの製作依頼があった。デザイナーの横関さんからは、これまで価値がないとみなされてきた短い材や枝虫材に、デザインやものづくり、そしてコミュニケーションを通して新たな価値を見出そうという提案があった。それはまさに、僕たちが家具づくりの中で取り組んできたことと一致していた。実際の製作では、木という素材の魅力を引き出す横関さんのデザインを、いかに図面通りに、目に見えないところまで精度高く加工するかという点にこだわった。そこには、きっとカリモク家具にしか出せない良さがあると思っている。日本の木をできる限り適切に、そして価値高く使っていきたい。日本の森林は、樹木の種類だけでもおよそ1200種。同じ緯度帯の国々と比べても圧倒的に多様だ。そこには微生物や昆虫、鳥など多くの生き物が共存していて、僕ら人間は、美しい景観や豊かな水源といった恩恵を受けている。自然のバランスに配慮しながら、人が関わり、手をかけることでこそ、森は健全な姿を保つことができる。自然の摂理がつくり出した、人工的には再現できない美しい素材としての木。その美しさをどう生かしていくかということを、これからも大切に取り組んでいきたいと思っている。

What a Wooden Furniture Manufacturer Can Do to Sustain Beautiful Forests and Make the Most of Beautiful Materials
We, as a Japanese wooden furniture manufacturer, have long questioned whether it is right to choose timber solely for its quality, convenience, or ease of use at a time when Japan’s forests are facing various challenges. With this in mind, we launched brands such as Karimoku New Standard, MAS, and Karimoku Case, all of which use domestically sourced wood. Yet the reality is that the forests in Aichi Prefecture—where our company is based—are also struggling to remain sustainable as an industry. That is why we felt it was essential to make active use of Aichi-grown timber as well. It was at this moment that we received a request to produce work for a new project originating in the prefecture. Designer Mr. Yokozeki proposed finding new value—through design, craftsmanship, and communication—in short logs and insect-damaged wood that had previously been considered of little worth. This aligned perfectly with what we had been pursuing in our furniture-making. During the actual production process, we focused on how to precisely craft every detail, even those not visible, in accordance with Mr. Yokozeki’s drawings—designs that bring out the inherent charm of wood as a material. I believe this is where Karimoku Furniture can deliver something truly unique. We want to use Japanese wood as appropriately and as valuably as possible. Japan’s forests contain roughly 1,200 tree species—an overwhelmingly diverse range when compared with other countries in similar latitudes. These forests are home to microorganisms, insects, birds, and many other living beings, while we humans benefit from their beautiful landscapes and abundant water sources. Only when people remain involved and care for the forests with consideration for the natural balance can these forests maintain their healthy state. Wood is a beautiful natural material shaped by nature’s own processes—something impossible to recreate artificially. We want to continue exploring how best to honor and make use of that beauty.
